Wait what? How are you then going to send someone money?! If not through the bank? What special USA feature is this?

Its crazy, every time I am in the US and a group needs to split a bill its a absurd debate over which third party payments provider to use.

I've even had people refuse cash because they want me to "venmo" them or whatever stupid app they prefer.

Isn't "split the bill" something that the restaurant does?

Sometimes. In USA they may require one check for parties of >N (where N can be 6). Some (fancy) places won't split at all. Then consumers juggle apps to square up the deal.

Yes but a lot of people just use apps. It's weird.

Americans are super weird about dining procedures and expectations. Remember, we tip here. It's weird.

Most of Europe tips too, and increasingly there is a service charge too (at least in the UK it has become standard now).

According to this list it doesn't seem like most of Europe tips too

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tipping_customs_by_cou...

In your list it says 13 out of the 18 countries tipping is customary or expected. France and Spain are not among those, which tracks with my experience.

lol blocked with dns4eu

what a joke this resolver has become

My time has come, I will not lurk anymore. Where are the pitchforks btw?

Wot. Everyone has an old throwaway?

Really? Whats wrong with calling someone a Karen?!

It doesn't take much googling to answer that.

Edit: look you guys, We're not Bowdlers and have never been interested in language policing but I wouldn't have thought this was a borderline case.

It's not a borderline case. People have trouble with the distinction between a judgement about a word overall, and a judgement about what a word will do to an HN thread. Also, people just like to gripe.

Where are the cool free projects? This repography is yet another product that wants my money.

Yes, this is actually not unusual. People need food, water, shelter, and suchlike in order to survive, and so they exchange their labour for goods and services. Money is a helpful token now rather widely used in this bartering process.

I know it's quite common in the web development community to take a lot of freely provided code which took immense labour to write, and then stitch it together, in a way that requires very little skill or effort, in order to sell the result - but this isn't the norm in the world at large.

Their developers decided donating their time to a bunch of demanding know-it-alls with no appreciation for their work was a bad deal for them.
