Katakana (the above character set representing syllables) is used for words of foreign origin, which this pastry is. In turn it stems from French « langue de chat ».

I got Death Stranding on a Steam sale, was thrilled to play my first Hideo Kojima game, but couldn't finish it; so I understand why it has little appeal to some people.

Some of the many game mechanics I didn't enjoy at all:

- Holding still and holding your breath until.

- Having to calm your technobaby or they will have a nervous breakdown.

- Constantly tilting your weight left and right so your packages don't fall.

- Slowly walking everywhere, because your packages will fall if you're not careful.

I don't know it it gets better after 20 hours, I couldn't reconcile my need for entertainment against knowing 80% of those hours were spent walking and balancing my stack of packages. I'll still try another of his games, but likely not DS 2.

Members of these groups are deeply embedded and heavily represented within top AI companies. Anthropic is particularly impacted, as its leadership is almost entirely made up of EAs. One of EA's goals has been to get EAs hired at the major AI labs so that they can influence AI's development. Edit: saw the other responses. I don’t think effective altruism was the right answer. Effective accelerationism, which came out of effective altruism, has all the ideas about human extinction and needing to develop AGI at all costs to save the species insanity.

TBF they never should have removed touch id. It's bonkers that we can't have both with phones that expensive.

Guns appeal to a very basic, dumb, violent side of ourselves. A college student being proficient and diligent enough to do experiment with synthetic biology doesn't sound like someone violent. Reckless, yes, but not very violent.

Sounds like a very privledged view to either so trust your government to manage our society or alternately choose death if your current position in society stops being feasible.

So true. The number one risk to your life and liberty is the government. The number 2 is rich guys. Both play a vital role if managed properly and proper management requires copious amounts of instrumenta od violenceto be available to the general populace. Its the deterence and rectification pathway for when all else has failed to keep the government and rich guys from abusing you.

You could convince yourselves that being a gun nut is a civic duty, but in my experience, gun nuts just really want the sense of power and safety firearms give.

There might be some that actually believe the patriotic stance, but for the ones I've met it's not about using them to fight the corrupt government (otherwise USA's democracy wouldn't be in the state it is right now); it's about the fantasies that they could dominate any violent conflict through overwhelming skill and firepower. They seem to think that having firearms puts them in the safe side of survival of the fittest.

I have to agree that weapons are very interesting from an engineering point of view, as any complex machine, you can appreciate the engineering and ingenuity... although thinking about their main purpose is a huge turn down. By all means let's keep making weapons, let's use them if needed, but let's not fall in love with them.
